Mission and History
Our Mission
Epilepsy Florida is dedicated to supporting those impacted by epilepsy by confronting the spectrum of challenges created by seizures.
Our History
Established in 1971 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), Epilepsy Florida (EFL) is the principal agency for epilepsy programs and services sponsored by the State of Florida, servicing an estimated 426,000 Floridians who live with the condition. For most of our history we were known as Epilepsy Foundation of Florida but in July 2018 we formally changed our name as we co –founded Epilepsy Alliance America, a nation-wide network of community-based epilepsy organizations. EFL also serves as the lead advocate for the rights and needs of people with epilepsy and seizures at the local, county, state and national level.
Epilepsy Florida provides many valuable services to individuals and their families, regardless of their financial situation, including:
Support Groups
Living with epilepsy is easier when you can share with others who are in a similar situation. EFL offers a variety of support group meetings on a monthly basis for adults and youth living with epilepsy and parents of children living with epilepsy. We also offer online support group platforms through Facebook.
Information and Referrals
Each of the EFL local offices houses a fully-staffed resource center offering a wide range of informational brochures on epilepsy and seizures in English, Spanish and Creole. Informational videos on epilepsy are also available in English, Spanish and Creole. Periodicals and books, specific to epilepsy, are available for reference.
Prevention and Education
EFL provides comprehensive prevention and education services and presentations throughout Florida to schools (personnel and students); professionals, including physicians and attorneys; police, emergency medical services personnel, health care professionals, community based organizations with special emphasis on health and social service agencies; and providers, such as day care centers.
Individualized Case Management
The Epilepsy Florida Case Management Program provides individuals with seizures and their family with Individualized Plans of Care (IPOC) tailored for the specific needs of the client and family.
Medical Services

Advocacy

Camp
Each year Epilepsy Florida sends children with epilepsy to Camp Boggy Creek which makes it possible for children with epilepsy to enjoy a camp experience in a safe, medically-sound environment. Located just a short drive from Orlando, Florida, children can spend time with others who are just like them and share their life experiences, which serves as a reminder they are not alone.
